So, maybe my ignorance of a Tale of Two Cities helped me enjoy this. I've never read Tale so can't speak of the correlations or lack there of.

Lucie Manette is the Golden Thread in the Dark, a child of light magic that helped free her father from cages where he was bled. There is both Light & Dark Magic in this reimagining of NY. There's not really solid "hey this is how magic evolved", just that it did and it caused a divide.

Of course, the light felt superior and built walls to house the dark. Lucie is thrust into the spotlight again when her boyfriend, Ethan, is accused of being a traitor to the light.

The story is a bit brutal and bloody and times and shows the leaders of both the Light & Dark filled with so much hate.

While no spoilers: have tissues ready for the last portion of the book. You'll need it.

HIGHLY recommend this one, especially if you're looking for a story that wraps itself up nicely but does leave room in case there's a 2nd installment later.
