This was the very first 'adult' book I ever read. It is the story of Shane and Karen. Shane is a wealthy man, hurt by his mother's abandonment when he was a child. He wants a child of his own, but not a wife. He is searching for a surrogate when he meets Karen.

Karen is a very young woman who spent the last few years helping her father with his book. He died recently, leaving her alone, as her mother died when she was a child. She has no job skills, and no experience with members of the opposite sex. Not knowing what position she is applying for, Karen answers Shane's ad.

Eventually circumstances lead Shane to marry Karen, who has agreed to a divorce after their child has been born. She will raise the child for some time, before turning it over to Shane, or so the contract states. What ensues is their story.
