Theology from the Belly of the Whale Author:Frederick Herzog, Joerg Rieger The late Frederick Herzog, professor of systematic theology at Duke University Divinity School, challenged his peers to expand the boundaries of the field by paying close attention to what was happening in the church and in the world, to do theology "from the belly of the whale." He never stopped reminding the church and theology to listen to th... more »ose who had been left out of their influential ranks: the marginalized, African Americans, Native Americans, women, and the poorest of the poor in Latin America. This reminder is the thread that holds together Herzog's work, which has been brought together here in a single volume for the first time.
This reader addresses the major problems of the last four decades and offers an original voice and new ways of doing theology that will continue well into the next century. Its four parts correspond to four major stages in Herzog's work: (1) the making of a liberation theologian, (2) shaping liberation theology, (3) remodeling theology and the church, and (4) developing a vision for the future. In this final part, Herzog works toward merging the different aspects of his work into a more comprehensive structure and developing practical models and plans for reshaping theological education and the church.
The pieces in this reader consist of theological essays, sermons, short addresses, a few poems, and correspondence with students, theologians, and leading religious and political figures across the world.« less
