A fascinating depiction of London of the 18th century enlivened by the careers of two criminals of the time: Jonathan Wild, a notorious highwayman and thief, and Jack Sheppard, a gambler and pimp. The result is a "personalized" picture of the times: crime and punishment, gaols and prostitures, poverty and disease. The entire is enhanced with Georgian poetry inspired by their crimes and engravings by Hogarth. Lively and easy reading.
