This is a historical novel based on the crusade against the Cathar "heretics" in southern France. The troubadour Roland is in love with Diane, but he cannot have her because she is an ordained celibate of the hunted Cathars. The wrath of the Inquisition descended upon Diane and Roland's king has called upon him to wage holy war.
