Don't let the title fool you. This is not a book about evangelists in the American sense of the word. Rather, it's a story of three, young Parisian historians living together in a house. When an uncle joins the household, he dubs them the three evangelists (read 'apostles') because their names are the French equivalent of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

The well-crafted plot revolves around the three men, with the help of the uncle, a retired policeman, investigating the disappearance of a neighbor. But along the way we get to know an amazing array of major and minor characters and learn a little bit about the scholar's areas of expertise - the Stone Age, the Middle Ages, and WWI warfare.

A special bonus, which added depth to the story, was the way in which each of the main characters applied the knowledge from their narrow studies to gain insight into people and solve their current problems.
