Beirout, Oct. 14.—My friend Captain Chesney, being anxious to arrive at Damascus, from whence a small caravan was about to start for Bagdad, by way of Palmyra and the Desert, this morning availed himself of the departure of a merchant vessel starting for Tripoli, to accelerate the accomplishment of his views, intending to take the Cedars and Baalbec in his route. For my own part, being desirous of first visiting that portiou of the mountain of Libanus, usually known by the name of the Kesrouan, orCastravan chain, I was unable to accompany him any further, although I did not abandon all hopes of overtaking him at Damascus; but 1 sent my heavy baggage by this conveyance, by which means I was better prepared for excursions in a mountainous country. Wanting a companion, I engaged a young Maronite, the son of a petty merchant of this place, to accompany me in this expedition. He was a fine intelligent youth, of a cheerfnl disposition, and possessing an ardour for acquiring knowledge quite uncommon in his countrymen. His Christian name was Hannah (John).
