Newly elected sheriff Ben Madison has the job of introducing the new doctor to the community of Frost Falls. The only problem is that he's been poleaxed when he meets the new physician -- Dr. E. Ridley Woodhouse, a woman.
Ben may be attracted to the new doctor but the community is wary of a woman doctor and avoids her like a new plague. But the good doctor is made of stern stuff and soon starts to prove her worth. Lily Salt, who is the major character in Book 3 (see below), has 4 children and an abusive husband. When the doctor starts helping Lily, her husband doesn't approve and he starts to make trouble for Dr. Woodhouse.
Jo Goodman continues her delightful dialogue between the major characters. It is fresh and light-hearted which is a nice counterpoint to the difficult times these characters must endure. The ending of the novel sets the scene for the last book in this fine series.
