The main characters are well developed and the story moves along quickly. You can feel great sympathy for them without needing to be empathetic. I could imagine the landscape and the people very well from the descriptions in this audio book. From impoverished beginnings in Scotland to fabulous wealth in Australia, happiness is fleeting for all but the overall tone is not at all depressing. Excellent listening for a long commute.
