Let me be honest with you. When I was a young girl, Hans Holzer was the ghost book writer! He had great books geared towards young people and it really helped to stir up my love for the paranormal as an adult. I do not enjoy his books as an adult though. All of his books now are full of "case histories" that include these detailed accounts of Himself, a medium,the owner of the 'haunted house' and a ghost who is somehow lost and stuck on this earth, desperate to contact someone. When I say 'full of' it, I mean FULL OF IT. I find myself dreading each drawn out page. Don't get me wrong. Some people truly believe in this. I just find it so hard to believe and it seems like Holzer takes what may have been an actual paranormal encounter, exciting in it's own right and turns it into a circus side show, dull and (sorry if this upsets you) embarassing!
I found myself reading only the part of each story told by the person who had the encounter...none of the stuff with the 'psychic medium' wandering around the house with her eyes rolled back in her head. If you ask me, it's stuff like this that gives the genre a bad name.
If I were a skeptic reading this kind of drivel it really would be hard to believe in the possibility that ghosts exist.
Now, like I said above, at the beginning of each case history there is an encounter. The encounters themselves were quite interesting and well written. I did enjoy those parts. The rest of the book on the other hand....Rasberries.
