I just sent out a 9 pound box Priority Rate. The price came to $25 which seemed awfully high but the USPS web site verifies that this is correct. However, my question is, when I saw how high the price was going to be, I asked them to cancel the postage, give me back the package, and give me an 8.95 flat rate box since my box wasn't much bigger than one and I figured I could stuff everything in. The clerk refused to do it! She said that since the postage label had already been applied to the box it was now out of my hands and I couldn't have it back! I want to know is this true or did I just get screwed out of $16?

I think they have an "all sales final" rule on postage and stamps.  Once she printed the sticker, it was sold.  Still seems like she could have voided it somehow, if she wanted to.  And she certainly could have recommended a flat rate box.  $16 is a lot of money!

One particular clerk at my PO is very kind about finding the least expensive way to mail.  She has even repackaged stuff for me into a different Priority box behind the counter while I watched.  (It was two bras that I was returning, and I didn't want the other customers to see.)

All I can say Bren is I would have probably handeled it differently but I'm in a position where I can do that, she may not be.

One thing you can do is contact the PO through 1-800-ask-usps or the "contact us" link at usps.com and see what they say about it.

Live and learn I guess. One of the girls in another thread suggested that I should have told them I didn't have enough money on me to pay for it so they would have had to give it back. Too late now. From now I am going to keep well stocked in flat rate boxes, though!

I use a few different PO's and have had them actually say to me, go get a flat rate box and repackage this, before printing out the label.  Very nice of them.  Sorry that happened to you.

Hi Bren, when I go to the post office I always ask them to mail it the least expensive way.  This way I know i'm not being ripped off. :)

I was looking for something yesterday on a PO receipt I had (CD #) and noticed this printed at the bottom: All sales final on stamps and postage, Refunds for guaranteed sevices only.

I still think they should have given you a break Bren, but guess that is their rule.

one time I had gotten a express APC (since I was sending a mother day gift and wanted to get it on Mothers

day I had gone tot (Venice,ca0yet I happen to stop at another  (West Los Angeles)post office since I need new express envelope

(I had sealed the envelope but forgot to put in the gift card) this was on Friday -I was told

i had to mail that package today (since that post office thought the date was the day  to mail the package

but I told I wanted the package to arrive on Sunday, so the postal clerk -did a exchange for the APC sticker to

a regular express mail stamp

(so I could mail it at any post office (I ended up sending from the mar Vista post office on a Saturday

but there I was told the zip code was not a express mail delivery zip code (they wont deliver on Sundays to that zip code)

(as it turns my mom did get the deliver on Sunday (since it was mother days I think they made an exception)
