When I have trouble putting aside a book, it easily rates five stars for me. No, I haven't yet read the first novel in this series but I truly enjoyed this one. Brendan Prescott is asked to return to Queen Mary's Court to protect Princess Elizabeth. He finds himself serving a man he dislikes intensely as a double agent. He truly likes both women and is deeply troubled by the conflict between the two, enflamed by those around them seeking power and wealth. This is a period cloaked in conspiracy, treachery, and religious differences. Consequently, Brenden, even in his role at court finds danger in unexpected places. When someone poisons his squire, Peregrine, whom Brenden cherishes like a brother, he realizes that the danger of death is all too real. He was the intended victim!

The author keeps the novel moving quickly, linking event after event with considerable skill. What's not to like about our hero? Brenden is loyal, sensitive, intelligent and careful about his role in the court. His enemies include the Spanish representatives who are working to arrange marriage between Queen Mary and Prince Philip of Spain, an unknown killer, and others . The most divisive issue between the sisters is religion. Queen Mary wants England to return to the Catholic religion while Princess Elizabeth is just as determined that it remain true to the Protestant religion. So do many others. This is an excellent read that helps the reader understand this period in time and those who lived then. Read it friends. It's so well done I believe that most readers will enjoy this book.
