This collection was first published in 1837 and is based largely on legends of the past. yet Hawthorn has been called "the most modern" of our great nineteenth century masters of fiction. His themes-greed, lust, pride, the impulse to tyrannize- are of course still important today and are matters about which he himself said he wished "to open an intercourse with the world." He did so in these stories by mixing the actual with the imaginary-with startling and pleasurable results.
