Inspired by the real life of Ann and William Woodward, and William's murder in 1955 by his wife. The books shows why Dunne is considered one of the best authors who write about the rich and famous criminals.\

The book is well paced, and filled with details. The charactors are well developed and the plot keeps you reading late into evening.

NOt your typical lifetime television for victims novel.

One of Dominic Dunne's first books. Based on a true story of a poor, plain girl who marries into a rich NY society family. How she tries to be accepted and fit in - and what happens after her husband dies. Dunne writes like a true insider. The book is rich in detail and description.

The book captures the ambience of 40's upscale glamour world.

Interesting how the elite class lived, and died and how protective a society they were. It enrages the senses at how little they really valued each other or lives.

From the inside cover of the book:

ROMANCE In 1943, on the dance floor of Manhatten's El Morocco, showgirl Ann Arden meets Navy ensign Billy Grenville, the scion of New York's most aristocratic family. GLAMOUR Billy instantly falls in love. Much to the horror of Alice Grenville, the imperial family matriarch, Billy marries Ann. To the world they seem the perfect couple. GOSSIP One rainy night in 1955, the Grenvilles return home from a party for the Duchess of Windsor. Billy hears a scream from his wife's bedroom. He rushes to investigate - and Ann fires a shotgun into Billy Grenville's handsome face. SCANDAl The tabloids call it "the shooting of the century." But did Ann truly mistake her husband for a prowler - or did she murder him?
