Janet Kagan is one of the best story-tellers around. She writes FAR too few books.

If you like the original Star Trek Series, you'll really enjoy this book. Great story.

One of my favorite stories as a teen and as an adult. A world of large cat-type beings that have their children go on dangerous and challenging journey in order to reach adulthood. Guess what Starship crew are considered children when they arrive on the planet? Unfortunately, important and especially taboo topics are not discussed with children even if their kin in a distant world are dying from their silence. Luckily, Uhura's role as a bard of sorts comes in handy, Kirk is as much as a risk-taker as ever, Spock is his classic self, poor Chekhov..., and the good doctor is a bit absent but I loved his stand-in.
