The first book I read by Paula Marshall was "Hester Waring's Marriage" and I loved it so much that since then I have been reading her backlist. This book is connected to "Hester Waring's Marriage" and actually takes place chronologically before it. The heroes of the two books are best friends. But it really doesn't matter which one you read first. I enjoyed it very much, it's not quite as touching as HWM, but still well worth reading.
The setting is 1800's colonial Australia, and I commend the author for using an original setting for a traditional Regency era romance. Alan Kerr is a doctor who was unfairly accused of treason and exiled. He and Sarah, the heroine, strike sparks off each other and don't get along at first when she arrives from England with her brother. As time goes on, she recognizes and admires his dedication as a doctor to the colony, and he realizes she has a strong character and is much more than a frivolous upper-class twit. The heroine doesn't care much about class distinctions, but her brother is a snob, and later on causes a misunderstanding which temporarily breaks up the couple. It all culminates in an adventure out in the bush when she is kidnapped by some convicts during a rebellion. The hero helps her escape and then they have to make their way back to Sydney through the wilderness. I believe this part of the plot may be based on an actual convict rebellion that took place in Australia in 1804. 4 stars.
