A good memoir from a man who served as the secretary to the Union admirals in charge of the Atlantic Blockage Squadron during the Civil War. Those who are well read in this area will appreciate it for the details it provides, while newcomers to this period of history (the naval side of the war) will benefit from the overview of the naval problems in blockading and infantry assaults against the Confederate coastal forts.
