University of Pittsburgh 2007 - College Prowler Author:Jamie Cruttenden, Tim Williams Introduction from the Author I had no idea where to begin looking for the dream university that I had composed in my head. So, blindly, I began the college search. It was fate that led me to the University of Pittsburgh. The glossy pictures in the brochure reflected the closest thing to my dream college that I had seen to date. However, ... more »up to a point, the pictures were all I had. Further information and research on the University turned up high academic standards, a large student body with plenty of organizations to get involved in on campus, a bustling city atmosphere with the luxury of not actually being in the city, and more things to do on a Saturday night than you could do in a year. Yes, everything the brochure and research told me sounded pretty good, and awfully close to this picture-perfect college setting I envisioned. But did I really want to live there for four years? Unfortunately, I had to fly by the seat of my pants, and base my collegiate decision on the brochures. You, however, have a much more powerful resource in your hands. Would I change my decision to go to the University of Pittsburgh if I could have had this book when I was choosing a college? Absolutely notnot in a million years. Hopefully, this book will provide you with enough information for you to make a decision about the University of Pittsburgh, with as much confidence as I have in reflection. The University of Pittsburgh is climbing up the ladder of recognition every single year. Academic standards have skyrocketed in the last five years. Two of Pitt's varsity sports teams have earned national top 25 rankings. The University offers a variety of majors, as well as graduate school guarantees to those who qualify. A five minute bus ride will get you into the heart of downtown. A five minute bus ride in the other direction will get you so far out of town that you'll think you've left the city. But, all of this does not paint an accurate picture of the University of Pittsburgh. These are the things that I learned from the brochures, and probably what you're trying to dig past by reading this book. Yes, a Pitt degree is becoming an increasingly prestigious thing, and yes, there are plenty of choices in degrees, extracurriculars, and things to do on Saturday night, but college is so much more than classes and parties. College becomes your home for four years, and sometimes longer. Research all that you can, and choose your new home wisely. I hope this book provides you with a more accurate picture of what life is really like at the University of Pittsburgh. Jamie Cruttenden, Author
