The finance chapter presents a comprehensive analysis of the circumstances through which most of the cities cot into their fiscal bind (remember this was published in 1976!) and suggests what each level of government can do, whether in the short run or long run, to ease the bind. The Housing chapter surveys a numbe rof past and current aspects of housing; what has happened to the quality of housing, the cost of housing, changing patterns of racial segregation and the reasons for slum formation. The crime chapter focuses on the near term methods of reducing street crime, particularly robbery - what the individual can do to avoid being victimized and what the local government can do to increase the risks for the criminal. The bulk of the education chapter is devoted to an analysis of desegregation in the public schools since 1968 (again, this book is from 1976!). The transportation chapter covers most of the problems in the passenger transportation scene.« less
