Just a PSA heads up about the hold and AR features since this is a holiday weekend. (Im a little late I guess)

If your going to be out of town or without computer access its in your greater interest to use these features. A lot of times a WL book will pop up and get canceled because a member wasnt there to accept them. When that happens you lose your place in line and have to start all over again. So if your going to be away from your comp even for just two or three days consider putting your account on hold so that you get passed up on the WL. Or stocking up on credits and putting your WL books on AR. Even if your #98 of 99 on a book its a good idea to AR the book when your gone. You never know when someone might wanna be nice and post a book to your WL directly.

Great idea, Chris.  I also use the Vacation feature when I have reached my postage limit.  I can still get my WL books without having to send out books when I'm broke.  I just have all my WL books (all 199 of them) set to autorequest.

I always try to remember to use AR. I do forget once in a while when I have added a bunch in one sitting.  But, it's great to log on and see you suddenly have a book (or sometimes several) on their way without having to do anything. Especially, when it is one that has been WL'd for months & months. Right now I think there are 6 or 7 WL books coming in.

ETA: One feature I would like to see added is that when you WL a book a secondary screen pops up to ask if you want the book AR'd. Then you don't have to go to your WL to d that. Maybe that will be part of the WL changes we have heard are coming.

I love the Vacation Hold and the AR features.  This summer I have been gone for long stretches of time with my Mom's stroke, then her death and finally a family reunion.  By using AR, I was able to obtain 7 books that were on my WL that I would otherwise have missed out on owning.  I also like it when a book I am posting is on AR as I know that I can package it up and mail it the same or next day.

on the subject . . .

if i put my account on hold - does that automatically put my wish list on hold?

i'm going on vacation for a week.   i don't want any orders off of my bookshelf since i obviously won't be around to accept the orders.  i'd prefer not to put my wish list on auto request - since i have many books with multiple versions on it.  but i don't want to loose my place in line on wishlist books since i wont' be around to accept orders.

From the help center, essentially the answer is yes,

If a Wish List book becomes available while a Hold is in effect, and the Wish List book is NOT set to auto-request:

  • you will be "passed over" for that copy
  • you will retain your place on the Wish List

Good to know!  I'm going on vacation in a month and I'd hate to lose out on my WL books.  Guess I'll have to make a decision on some for auto-request before I leave.  A couple of books, I have multiple ISBNs on my WL.  I only want one copy though, I'd hate to set them all to auto-request and come home to find 3 copies of the same book being mailed to me!

Sarah,

I also have multiple ISBNs on my WL, and decided to put the binding that I "most wanted" on auto request, while leaving the other ISBNs on regular WL status.  That way, if another ISBN comes up first, I have to manually accept it AND remember to remove the other ISBNs off of my WL.

So far I haven't had any WL books posted though.  :-(
