As a grownup, I enjoyed this children's book placed in Sherlock Holmes' London, in which the rats and vampire hound are the good guys. The characters are well developed for such a short book as is the historical setting. And the vampire hound restrains his impulse to use "the bite!" Not a book for very young children, though, due to Sherlock Holmes-like situations (kidnapping, threats of violence).

Meet Barksdale--a good dog with a strange secret. Barksdale happens to be a vampire, but a gentle one who would never harm a soul. Living the quiet life of a gentleman in Victorian London, he has revealed his true identity to few. He prefers to remain anonymous, using his fortune to help the poor.
