If you start this series assuming it is going to be like the anime, then that is the wrong frame of mind and you will definitely not like this series. If you are open-minded and read it as a totally separate story, then you will absolutely enjoy it. Things do get off to a bit of a slow start, but the series really picks up in the next few volumes.

I was very excited to get this manga, because I loved most of the animae, and I was hoping to see how the ending was supposed to go.

I didn't make it through the first volume of the manga. The characters are so different, it's much more poorly written, it was just a trial to read. I loaned it to a friend who said the story got better near the later books, but it still wasn't great and wasn't worth slogging through the beginning, so I'm glad I stopped.
