Esther is a Jewish girl who escapes from Nazi-occupied Europe to Israel. Nejma lives in a Palestinian refugee camp. The book portrays how they both deal with similar feelings of fear, helplessness, and desire for a better life. Le Clezio, a French author of 20 novels and a Nobel Prize winner, shows how the girls experience suffering, struggles, desires, and dreams while trying to find their place in the world. Well written and lyrical sentences describe vividly their lives.
