When Emily Beaumont's older brother disappears, she assumes he is in trouble and afraid to tell their parents that he needs help. She requests assistance from Mark Hunter, a friend of her brother that irritates yet fascinates her. For his part, Mark is intrigued by Emily and agrees to assist in seeking for Tarquin, especially when Emily is approached by a pimp claiming Tarquin is married and ill and needs her help. As Mark and Emily seek the truth of Tarquin's whereabouts and try to keep scandal from reaching her family, it is Emily's own past that may cause the most damage and keep them from exploring the sparks that keep smoldering between them.

This is an enjoyable historical romance story about two people not quite as perfect as society expects.
