But it is Vera who presents the ultimate danger to Tang. For it is the passion that flares up between them that challenges his dedicated, even ascetic and mystical, way of life-a way of life he feels he must follow if he is to realize his destiny.

Novel about a Chinese warlord in 1920's. Includes multiple interesting characters, including a Russian aristocrat who escaped the Bolsheviks; an American missionary; arms traders; and other warlords and bandits. Fast-paced and well-written.

This was a most interesting book of the Asian thought process and culture. It was not as good as the Shogun series but not much is that good. I would suggest it if old Asian culture is an interest.
