The Watchman - Joe Pike, Bk 1 Author:Robert Crais Joe Pike, the intriguing, enigmatic partner of L.A. PI Elvis Cole, takes center stage in this intense thriller from bestseller Crais (The Two Minute Rule). To pay back an old debt, Pike is coerced into protecting Larkin Barkley, a hard-partying young heiress whose life is in danger after a "wrong place wrong time" encounter that quickl... more »y escalates and spins out of control. The enemy is shadowy, violent and relentless -- but the fierce, focused Pike, one of the strongest characters in modern crime fiction, is equal to the challenge. The breathless pace and rich styling are sure to appeal to readers of hard-boiled fiction in general, but since up to now Pike has mostly remained in the background, some fans of the Elvis Cole series (The Forgotten Man, etc.) may find the explicit picture that emerges of Pike at odds with the image they've constructed for themselves.« less
This book delves into the character of Joe Pike. It's probably one of the best books by Crais that I've read. While we know why Cole likes having Pike around, this is the first book that gives insight into why Pike likes Cole so much -- which I appreciate finding out.
Another great novel from Robert Crais which gives the reader a good insight into Joe Pike. Could not put it down. The author is one of my favorite and having read all his others,I appreciated this one with the insight and compassion he allowed Joe Pike.
An excellent job of balancing suspense with intriguing peeks into Pike's past, peeling some of the layers of mystery away from this enigmatic character. Great action, balanced with tenderness. I've enjoyed the author's Elvis Cole series, and look forward to many more Joe Pike novels.
I love this style of writing -- unfolding the story step by step in a way that makes you want to continue reading chapter after chapter. Joe Pike is a mercenary hero, very similar to Jack Reacher (Lee Child's hero) - tough, spirited, and VERY capable.
