So I have a few books that aren't water dmg but have wavy pages.  I'm looking at one right now that has 72 people on WL. I just bought it and it has wavy pages.  Not many.  My concern is being accused of sending water dmg books.  But it seems like it's a cheap paper issue.  Should I worry about sending them out?

I wouldn't worry about it.  Water damage looks very different from the kind of wavy pages you sometimes see on new books.  I should know - I've accidently spilled water on two brand new books in recent weeks.

I have some of those wavy books too... and looked really close and see that while they are wavy, there is zero water damage and no crackly pages and the waves are so uniform.  I don't think anyone should have an issue with those.

I agree with the other posters.  I notice on the books I have in a pile for PBS, when it's very hot and humid out, the pages will look wavy, but when the weather is back to normal, the pages look OK again...that might be another factor. 

If they were water damaged, they'd be stained or even smelly. 

Well I am in Western Wa.  Very humid here year round.  Hopefully I won't have a problem with sending any of them out.  It's mostly newer books so I'm thinking it's a paper quality issue.  Just not as good as they used to make them.

ugh - i am having the same problem! i recently got a copy of 'the guy not taken' by jennifer weiner and it has a few wavy pages, too, and i really don't think that it's due to water, but i can't be sure. the sad thing about it is that there are 184 people on one wl for it and 44 on another.

Wavy pages looks and feel drastically different than water damaged pages.

The main thing is wavy pages still feel like a normal page. Once a page has liquid damage it feels a little harder, rougher and not as supple or easy to turn.  Wavy pages are also uniform and usually liquid damaged pages aren't.

I have noticed that a lot of the new paperbacks have wavy pages and they haven't even been read yet! It's disgusting because many of the members here will complain if you post them. I have many that are on wishlists, too, but hesitate to post due the extreme pickness of many people. They want brand new books (which they are) but will accuse you of sending an unpostable book. I wish R&R would clarify that some books are sold with wavy pages and it's not water damage.

Ditto  :  )  I was in Borders last SAT and I was going to buy a small mass-market PB with a pretty big WL but I passed.  All 3 copies were wavy.  Not even humidity wavy, just cheap paper, cheap binding, cheap glue mass-market PB wavy.  I didn't want the hassle.

Would this be an OK thing to do?

Create a topic in Book Bazaar and say that you have X book thas has no water damage but has wavy pages.  If someone replies that they want it, you can post it directly to them.  Somoene with more experience than I might be able to say whether this is ok or not.

Debs that would be allowed and something I was thinking about doing with a couple of mine. Unfortunately I waited so long about one of them that it's no longer WL.

I've noticed that a lot of the kids books I buy brand new  have wavy pages. The waviness is near the binding.  You can tell it's not water damage it's more like the binding is too tight.

This is extremely common, but that doesn't mean you aren';t going to get a complaint.  (sigh)

I sent out a book which was new, but had rippled edges right from the store.  The person who received it complained about water damage.  I didn't return her credit, because nearly every recently published inexpensive paperback will develop rippling after a few weeks.  Printing is so cheaply done these days, but that doesn't mean it's water damage.

My opinion, anyway.

This is not wavy pages but something I saw the other day that might cause issues like the wavy pages.

Brand new books come passed by desk, as per usual I check them for quality and the pages themselves looked burned at the edges with smudges across the page.. strange, so I opened the next book, it too had this, after the fifth book I pretty much figured it had to be some new trend or the style in which the author wished to have the book. Sadly I cannot remember the name of the book, only that it was fantasy.

But I can see alot of picky people recieving this new book and sending it back saying it wasnt brand new. Of course it did not smell of  burned paper but we all know someone that is so picky theyd still want credit for it.

I will say from experience (4 years working in a library) ALOT of the new mass marker PBs are very poorly made and do have wavy pages, we get like 7 to 10 copies of one title and when ALL of them are in the same condition it has to be the printing process that is causing it.

Plus I do remember a funny situation were some book (out of print now) came through and the pages were made to look like water marks and coffee mug stains. They wanted it thrown away and I said it was the way it should be, did not smell, pages did not feel leathery like they would if wet.  Plus coffee stains always have that tell tale smell..

I know people here have very high standards BUT these are second hand books, some wear will be evident, if you want brand new then buy it then swap it.  Sure this will get me black listed or something, but hey give people alittle slack on the quality of an item because mostly it might not be their fault.
