  Mama knows best

“Don’t get married!” Mama would say
As she watched
Me unwrapped the Ken doll I had been begging
For since Christmas

“Don’t get married!” Mama would say
When she caught
Me looking out the window at the boys
Chilin on the stoop

“Don’t get married!” Mama would say
When she listened
To me and my friends singing
‘Camille and Jake sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g’

“Don’t get married!” Mama would say
As we returned
From the store and purchased
My first box of Maxi pads

“Don’t get married!” Mama would say
When I professed
My undying love to Jordan
In a note left on the kitchen table

“Don’t get married!” Mama would say
When I announced
I was pregnant
And dropping out of school

“Don’t get married!” Mama would say
Clearing the table, pausing
Staring at Daddy’s empty chair
Blowing out air
