Chris

I string with elastic thread and was interested in you idea of the needle and thread - what do you mean about putting the elastic through the thread - sounds like a great idea.

Hey!  Come and join a game that is taking signups!  It's Craft o rama elephant swap  I've shown off a couple of my beaded necklaces and hopefully some more beaders come join - It'll be fun and maybe I'll get some new ideas too!

I just started beading about one month ago.  I am doing stringing.  I am also taking a sliver smithing class this summer.  I have done some safe pieces so far, but I would love to start being more adventurous, mixing lots of different stones, ect.

I’m a beader! Wow, I didn’t even know this forum existed. Am new so am still exploring PBS and discovering. Anyway, back to my beading. I make earrings, necklaces and bracelets. I have cases and cases of beads and findings. Have not been to a BIG  show, mostly just do things for friends, special request and I make lots of gifts :)   Besides reading, beading is my next best hobby. I love to see other’s work and talk to them. I have been to various craft shows and it’s funny, some people are really friendly and like to share information and techniques…some others are like, hey, if you aren’t buying, don’t talk to me.
I saw something interesting yesterday at a local craft show. Has anyone ever seen “ladder thread”? First time for me yesterday. The girl had taken 20 strands, different colors and put them together with a pretty necklace finding. It looks like very fine crocheting and tiny beads but it’s thread and light as a feather!
I would love to talk with other beaders and hear what they do. PM me!

Jewelry making/beading is my major passion.  I string, weave, wire wrap - I do it all.  My 'company' is called Sparkles - every girl should sparkle.  I know all the best places online to purchase supplies.  PM me if you want some links or pictures of my pieces.

Hey

I'm very interested in bead making. I'm an art major and I love everything crafty. Does anyone have any helpful tips or ways I can get into bead making?

Thanks for the help,

Meghan

Meghan, do you mean you want to make the actual beads, such as lampworking, or do you want to make jewelry and/or other things with beads? Do you live in a large metropolitan area?  If I knew these two things I could direct you better to what you are interested in creating.

Susan,

I'm interested in actually making beads. Lampworking could be an option. Is it expensive to start taking up? And I do live near Atlanta.

I got started for about $200, lampworking. There is a good site called Lampworketc.com. It's a forum with a TON of info. A friend got me some of the special glasses you'll need from there that someone was selling for pretty cheap, along with a Hot Head torch. I also ordered a lot of stuff from arrowsprings.com. They are pretty affordable. I started out with a few books by Cindy Jenkins and Kimberley Adams to teach myself, though I recommend taking a class if you can. I had a friend that gave me a demo.

You could try polymer clay. It's what I work with most of the time. It's much less expensive to start up and all you need is an oven to bake them so they get hard. Your tools are your hands, possibly a pasta machine and a few pokey tools (knitting needles, regular needles) to poke holes.

Then there is paper bead making, air dry clay, painting wooden beads...

If you'd like more information about polymer clay, PM me. I have a few tutorials on my website for it as well.

Good luck!

I would suggest that you get in touch with the local Bead Society in Atlanta and  check out any bead stores in your area to find out what is going on around town as far as classes, etc. These two resources should be able to give you enough information to get you going, and also you can check out their beads to see what you like. There are also tons of bead magazines of every sort out now. Go to a large bookstore and see what they have in magazines. Another thing  you can do is check out books from the library on beadmaking.

Good luck!

Wandering through forums (good way to procrastinate other work).  This makes me want to dig my beads out--I haven't done any beading since before I went to grad school.  I used seed beads & wire, making jewelry & little bugs.

I still pick up beading books sometimes.   I think about all the nifty things to make, but haven't actually done any of them yet.

Hi I'm Ashley an I bead at times-too many other crafts going. I used to work for Micheals and taught one of the women there to bead so that she could teach beading as I didn't have time as I taught one-stroke, scrapbooking, kids crochet and held badge workshops for girlscouts. I was also a girlscourt leader and mom. At the time we had 3 girls at home.

I've been making stitch makers for knitting and got so hooked on it I could use deffernen makers on each project for a yaer with out repeats!

I'm attempting to sell my handcrafted jewelry on etsy.com.  Not a thing has sold though.  Would appreciate feedback.

Claudia,

I see you have had some sales.  That's great!

I think it is tough going for us.  There are so many beaded jewelry sellers on that site.  It is hard to get noticed.  I just opened an etsy shop.  I think my prices are too low, but I wanted to find out how the site worked.  I would be playing with beads anyway, but mostly giving them away to friends and family!

Hi from one clamdigger to another! (do the locals still call themselves that?) I grew up on the Jersey shore in a town called Brielle, but now live in the midwest. I am a very avid beader. I make and sell lampworked beads and do bead stringing, beadwork and loomwork. I even had one of my loomwork patterns published in Bead and Button magazine as well as in a book called "Beaded Pictures".  I have a website were I sell some of my beads and jewerly. You can find me at www.beadsnsuch.com. Beading and books are two of my passions - I'm willing to trade beads for books if anyone has any of the books on my wish list.

I've just recently started teaching myself to bead. Mainly I've been making anglican prayer beads and selling them as a fundraiser at my church. I'm also making little bracelets and chip bead wrap bracelets and making them "rainbow of faith" bracelets and putting butterflies or whatever on either end as charms. I really want to learn to do more but it seems the supplies are so expensive!

I'm going to make an awareness bracelet for my mom. I found the instructions on a beading website but I've never worked with crimp beads or anything yet and I'm going to use crystals to make this bracelet. Any suggestions? It would be a real shame if I didn't secure everything properly and it broke.
