a package started in St Louis MO. It is on its way to Dallas TX. Not sure why it went from St Louis to Des Moines IA. That seems to be the wrong direction isn't it?

Not necessarily. Des Moines could be the location of the sorting facility for St. Louis. A couple of yrs ago, the p.o. consolidated and closed some sorting facilities, resulting in some areas having their facility farther away in another state.

I ship quite a bit for my business, and it's fairly common for my packages to end up at the "wrong" sorting centers.
