I do love Mary Alice Monroe stories! I could not put this book down. Can't remember the last time I devoured a book so quickly. I love the way she wites about nature, and about families. This story is two stories, current day with Eliza as an 88 year old, still controlling the family business and homestead. She brings her granddaughter and the daughter of her best friend growing up, a black girl who was the daughter of the ranch caretaker back to the old house on the property. . And the flashbacks of her as a young girl growing up in the segragated south, with two brothers and seemingly being able to outdo them in everything. Her Mama doesn't feel it's any way a proper young lady should act. The two stories come together so beautifully. SPOILER ALERT!
Just as I was looking forward to the last pages of the book coming together SMACK! END OF BOOK ONE. Continue reading more of Eliza's story in Book Two. WHAT???? I didn't see that coming. It totally brought my mood down. I am looking at reviews, and nobody else seems bothered by that.
