The book was well written and the characters well drawn. The story line is believable, if depressing.
The book did have some tropes: the rebellious teen and the evil religious leader. Good thing: There is a lot of violence, but it is not gratuitous or over described.
When you finish the book you are a little sad at the state of the world but don't necessarily feel like you learned a lot or grew.
