Small Southern towns hold a lot of secrets and this one is no exception; what I know I am going to like most about this series is that the main characters are not youngsters and life is somehow real--yes, some characters have old money, but most are just hard-working honest people like the ones I grew up around in my small Southern town. The first two books in the series were not at the library but even starting mid-stream, I am now searching the rest of the volumes. Yes, each seem to be able to stand on their own, but this is a group of people I want to visit over and over again.

This is a pleasant view of small-town southern life, featuring the feed-and-nursery-store-running wife of a southern magistrate. Unfortunately, in the last book, her husband was shot and is still recuperating, so she's now the magistrate. The mystery is cozy but not too cozy and the story hangs together well.

I've never read this author before and I really enjoyed this book. It's a cozy mystery, perfect for a rainy afternoon. I do want to read more of this Thoroughly Southern Mystery series and have requested two more books. If you like the cozy mystery I know you'll like reading about the Yarbroughs and the rest of the characters in Hope County, Georgia. This book has a clever plot.

Mystery with a twist of humor.
From back cover:
Judge MacLaren Yarbrough is the new magistrate of Hope County, Georgia - appointed to replace her husband. Joe Riddley, after he receives an injury. But when a local man is found murdered at Joe's birthday gala, MacLaren almost ends up on the wrong side of the law. And when she finds clues that hit too close to home, this savvy Southerner becomes determined to uncover the roots of the crime - and clear her family's name.
MacLaren tires to sweet-talk clues out of affluent matriarchs, shady drifters, and even a disgruntled parrot. But all her efforts simply raise more questions: How many questions can one small town hold? Which party guest had the strongest motive? And...Who Invited the Dead Man?

First book in this series that I have read and I enjoyed it. Combines small town southern living, a little romance and a whole lot of murder and suspense all in one neat little book! LOL

Have the next two waiting on me now...

A wonderfully portrayed Southern setting with MacLaren again as the unwitting heroine. A thoroughly Southern mystery.

Although I am reading this series out of order, I find the characters delightful. The big "surprise" in this book was evident before the end but didn't spoil the book for me.

This is the first book in the series. An endearing cast and setting in the South. The Feed and Seed and Nursery store is the setting and the star of the book is sixty something. This is fun mystery with alot of Southern wisdom from the not quite as young group, and fun, lots and lots of fun.
