Subject: Why am I being offered WL books?

I have my account set to vacation hold. All books have auto-request OFF. (I've triple-checked this.) I don't have any credits right now. But twice in the last week, I have been offered a WL book. (Two different books.) I declined the first one. Luckily I was only 1 of 2 on the WL, so it wasn't too bad getting kicked to the RL and re-adding to my WL. But the one I was offered this morning, I was 1 of a couple hundred.

Is this a glitch? Or has something changed? Cause I thought that when you were on hold, your WL was *hidden*, unless you had it set to AR.

Your WL is still able to be seen, even if you are on hold. My guess is someone posted the book directly to your WL.

Help Center sez:

How does the Vacation Hold affect My Wish List? All items not set to auto-request on your Wish List will be "hidden" from the system when a Hold is in effect.

  • If a Wish List book becomes available while a Hold is in effect, and the Wish List book is NOT set to auto-request:
    • you will be "passed over" for that copy
    • you will retain your place on the Wish List
  • If a Wish List book becomes available while a Hold is in effect, and the Wish List book IS set to auto-request:
    • if you have credit(s) in your account to request the book, it will be requested for you automatically, and sent to the mailing address on your account.
    • if you don't have any credits in your account, you will be passed over for that copy, and retain your place on the Wish List.

If you place a book on your Wish List while a Hold is in effect, that Wish List item will not be hidden by the Hold. Think of your non-auto-requested Wish List items as a birthday present.   Whatever is on your Wish List will be "wrapped up" by the Hold when it goes into effect, and the birthday present will be "hidden" from view by the wrapping; anything placed on the birthday present after it has been wrapped (any newly Wishlisted books) will not be hidden from view.  This analogy also applies to how the Hold "hides" items on your Bookshelf.  Auto-request items are not hidden by the Hold; however, they will be treated like they are hidden if you have no credits at the time a copy of the book becomes available when your account is on Hold.

So are these books that you put on your WL AFTER your hold?

edited for formatting issues.

Thanks for the PM Mary.

These books were on my shelf BEFORE my hold, but that was a good thought. Thanks Chris.

Charlie - maybe that's what happened... hmmm, no one has posted directly to me before. So you don't get skipped over if you have no credits if someone posts to your shelf?

Thanks for your input everyone.

Did they change that? Or maybe I'm confused. I know if you have your WL on autorequest and you get a WL book come up and you don't have credits it turns into the 48 hour hold. Is that only if your account is not on hold? I didn't realize it was different.

Yes, it is different if your list is on Hold.  From the Help Center:

      • If you have an item on auto-request and you do not have credits (and your account is not on Hold)
        • The auto-request will be converted to a regular Wish List offer: you will get an email notification, and you will have 48 hours to respond, just as explained above.
      • If you have an item on auto-request and you do not have credits (and your account is on Hold)
        • You will simply be bypassed for that book, and you will remain in the same "place in line" in the Wish List.
