Rick Savage is not your ordinary pilot, hes mysterious and reliable in deadly situations. When his brother fails to show up for the meeting planned with Shay to find this wrecked plane, Rick knows something has gone terribly wrong. Rick realizes the moment trouble arrives for him and Shay and just as hes trying to turn back and bring Shay to safety they are run off the road and left for dead. Will Rick be able to protect Shay or will his presence put them in more danger?
Shay is determined to do her job as the aircraft mechanic she is and when her coworker doesnt show up as planned, she makes up her mind to pursue this mission regardless. The more danger she and Rick find themselves in, the more she prays for Aiden to be safe and alive somewhere. Shay has to fight panic attacks and unthinkable weather conditions to get this job done. Shes used to being guarded and surviving on her own, but now she must rely on Rick to keep them alive. Is he all she hopes he is or is he just as dangerous as their surroundings?
I had absolutely no trouble getting into this book! From the first chapter, it had my full attention and promised a GREAT adventure. Even though both main characters have weaknesses (Shay has to fight panic attacks more than once, but Im not sure I couldve done better in her situation) they both constantly take risks for the other. Rick suffers from PTSD and has to fight to stay focused because of the war zone feeling he lands in. Its not known for most of the book if Aiden has survived and this brings added tension to the plot.
Some of the obstacles Rick and Shay must overcome: being stalked, getting run off the road, freezing temperatures (I was cold just reading about it), being held captive, Shay feeling exposed as the ONLY woman while in captivity/being leered at, Shay gets attacked once but has a gun held to her several times, lack of sleep (that alone had me wondering, how they managed to think on their feet when they got very little sleep in the story, I reasoned adrenaline and grace), villains in the story who are divided and constantly shooting at one another, the main villain and his lies (hes not scary at all, but hes obsessed with the prospect of finding gold), and did I mention freezing temps? The setting alone is brutal and unstable for each character.
Theres one scene at the end where Rick makes a decision that had me FURIOUS. If I was ever tempted to throw a book down, it was at that moment (I was too busy reading to see what happened next to throw the book). I understood why he did it, but to say I disagreed with his stubbornness is an understatement. Of course, his decision makes the story last a little longer and keeps the page turning pace going strong, but it had me in disbelief. Other than that, he was an outstanding flawed hero that prays outwardly and inwardly throughout the book.
I highly recommend this book for those who like fast paced action stories. This one was a perfect blend of mystery (I had no idea why the bad guys used Shay and Rick until the very end), danger, suspense and romance. I was slightly annoyed at how Shay and Rick want to keep their guard up with one another, but after what theyve been through in the past it makes sense that anyone would be extra cautious in their shoes. They work very well together and even though I was tempted to shake Shay once or twice from having a panic attack, she was no slouch when it came to fixing machines and taking risks. Despite my not agreeing with Rick on certain moves he makes, I enjoyed how he protected Shay. Whenever Rick gets hurt, she takes care of him really well. I actually laughed about Ricks gun, it definitely made the rounds!

Hey everyone! As I am sure many of you know, I love a good mystery. One that makes you scratch your head and wonder how it will play out, and keep you turning the pages until the end! Well, Wilderness Peril is exactly that type of book. And Elizabeth Goddard sure know how to keep readers enthralled until the end. I didn't put it down from the first page to the last:)
As you can see, there is a spunky female character and a handsome but surly hero. Shay is an airplane mechanic and is definitely strong. But you also see a vulnerable side to her, especially around heights. And Rick has his very obvious problems. Not the least of which was when he pulled a gun on Shay. Not telling you any more than that but it is a part I liked. It shows him as being very human.
The two of them are on their way to pick up an airplane with Rick's brother Aiden, when strange things start happening. Including being run off the road and left for dead. Shay is saved only by Rick's quick thinking and has to struggle with her feelings for him. After all, who wants to like a guy who pulls a gun on you? At the same time, she can't resist the strength he exudes nor the quiet calm with which he protects her. Rick also finds himself thinking about Shay and wanting more and more to be the one she relies on and trusts. But he knows that he isn't a whole man. The war can change a person a lot and it has done so to him. Is he worth her sticking her neck out for? And is she worth opening up to?
The suspense part of this is well done. I kept trying to figure out what Kemp was doing and why he needed them both. You slowly figure out parts but Mr's Goddard makes sure you don't get the whole picture until the end. Very well written and I could almost feel the terror as Shay strive to survive, as well as Rick doing his best to protect her. I do have to say, there was one part I was ready to scream. It is near the end and Rick makes a decision that I couldn't believe he made. I knew why he did but still, it was unbelievable!
Anyhow, totally loved this book and can't wait for the next book from Elizabeth Goddard! If you are looking for a quick suspense read that keeps you up into the night to finish, this is the one for you:)
