Rev. William J. Byron, S.J., a priest of the Society of Jesus, was the 12th president of The Catholic University of America as well as the president of the University of Scranton. From 2003-2004, Byron was also interim president of Loyola University New Orleans.
Fr. Byron was president from 2006-2008 at Saint Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia, from which he himself graduated in 1945. He is now a professor and lives in residence at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
Fr. Byron has reacted against a Holy See attempt to re-assert control over Catholic universities in the United States in the constitution Ad Tuendam Fidem, stating that "Theology professors must explain and not proclaim the faith".
Entering the Society of Jesus in 1950, he was ordained in 1961. In 1969, he received a doctorate in economics from the University of Maryland. He also was a guest on HBO's The Ali G Show.
