Fantastic 19-book series. If you loved the Horatio Hornblower series, you will LOVE these too. Don't think if you read one series you can skip the other. The main characters in each series are very different and should be savored all on their own. This series has Captain Jack Aubrey and his quirky sidekick Dr. Stephen Maturin. Pick a quiet evening and just enjoy them all. I think there was only one out of the entire 19 that I thought was a bit disappointing compared to the other 18. Both series are similar in the fact that both authors really set each scene well hitting all the senses, telling you what the Captain sees, smells, tastes, hears, feels....so that you feel you are right there. One of my favorite scenes was from one of the books that just gave an entire description of what he saw, felt, heard etc upon coming up on deck early in the morning. You will be right there waving on the high seas with him.
