Kristy Adams tells herself she couldn't care less if she swims for the school team in Surfside, Florida. The only reason she tried out was to keep her best friend company.

But when the twelve-year-old learns that she has made first string, she's surprised by how exciting it feels.

Now Kristy gets to race Mary June Williams, the new girl with the huge ego. And she can finally prove to her big brother--Kirk the champion swimmer--that she does have discipline. Soon her parents will be as proud of her as they are of Kirk.

Then Kristy's first meet ends in disaster. She has no choice--she has to quite the team. Doesn't she?
