This is a terrible book. Not so much for the content as for the way the author wrote it. I had read several articles by McWhorter on progressives' overreach about racism and thought he made some valid points. I expected this book to expand on those articles in a more systematic way - for example, to first explain his general point of view and then to explain how all those incidents that so fired him up went against his philosophy. Instead, he simply rants, rants and rants. I do not know what his general philosophy is, only that he is extremely angry.
Another serious flaw of his writing is that he over-generalizes, ascribing behaviors and beliefs to be much more widely held than in fact they are.
It is shocking to me that a tenured Ivy League professor could have written such a sloppy and ad hoc book. It is not worth reading. Find his articles online instead. Probably those had to pass through editors' hands. This book doesn't seem to have been edited, just written and published in a white heat. (Irony intended.)
