I saw this book and grabbed it without really paying much attention. A year later I started reading it. Wow, what an absolute delight. My only regret is not reading it right way.
Its an interesting book in the main character is a high school girl in a mans world. This twist keeps the dialog more masculine and certainly a lot of what our protagonist does is as if she were a boy. These sort of elements make the story very readable and deliver lots of surprises. If she was a boy once, she definitely "bloomed" over the summer, and many have trouble dealing with the improved version.
The author has a gift for describing people. It was as if I discovered unexpected verbal Easter eggs ---there were several times where I laughed out loud at descriptions of some of the characters. Incredibly well done and from cover to cover, a joy to read. Our protagonist lives in a tiny town, and the author added a lot of flavor to the characters.
Of course there is some drama our protagonist meets the new boy in school and awkward teenage drama ensues. Well done, entertaining for the reader and all G rated.
At one point the plot sort of dragged, and while that was a bummer, it also had a plot point. I appreciated the ruthless editing there were not any distractions or red herrings. It is well done story telling that is tight and crisp. Yet that makes it sound technical. It's not. It's warm and rich and engaging.
The ending was good. It left several things to the imagination, but planted the seeds for other things. Im rating this a four, which is to say I liked it a lot. Part of me feels that Im being unfair that I should bump it up to a five. Yet the other part of me thinks that this book is the text book example of a four.
A great book for all ages. I would give it a G rating.
