This is the 1997 version (6th revised edition) of the classic book by La Leche League. This book was a life saver for me when I was learning how to breastfeed my oldest child. The difference between this book and the other breastfeeding books on the market is that this one has a very warm and fuzzy feeling. The tone and attitude is very warm and treats the mother and baby as real people which is different than the books written by doctors who have never breastfed a child (or written by men), who write of the mother and baby as 'patients'. This book covers everything from how to breastfeed, how to wean, dealing with problems with nursing, discipline and starting solids (and more). I can't recommend this book or La Leche League in general highly enough!

This book reads more as an advocacy of breastfeeding book than a helpful guide for first time moms. I had lots of questions about nursing that this book did not answer. I ended up requesting the Nursing Mother's Companion. It was more comprehensive

This book covers practically everything you need to know about breastfeeding. Published by La Leche League International, you know it is a credible book! This classic book contains the latest scientific research on the health benefits of breastfeeding, the "how-to", support, encouragement, and guidance. In "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding", it describes: How to prepare for breastfeeding during pregnancy; the effects on newborns of medications; how to maintain an adequate supply of milk; how to pump and store milk; how to recognize and solve common breastfeeding problems; breastfeeding a baby with special needs; how nursing mothers can exercise and lose weight safely; tips for the working mother; and current research on the bennfits of breastfeeding, including improving your baby's IQ. I was a breastfeeding educator and registered dietitian for the WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) Program and we gave out this book to mothers that participated in our breastfeeding peer counselor program. I later bought it when I was pregnant with my own first child. It is an invaluable resource to any new mom!!! There is an index at the end of the book whereby you can look up anything related to breastfeeding and quickly locate it in the book. References to published research appear at the end of the book as well to back up facts presented in the book. This book is 465 pages, including the index and references.
