Coursen was born in New Jersey and has lived in Maine since the early 1960s. He attended Amherst College, Wesleyan University, and the University of Connecticut. A fighter pilot in the USAF in the 1950s, he became a member of the original Anti-Vietnam War organization, Individuals Against the Crime of Silence. He is a member of Veterans for Peace. This is his 31th book of poetry. He has won the Gretchen Warren Award from the New England Poetry Club, the Hart Crane Award from the World Order of Narrative and Dramatic Poets, the Poets Magazine Chapbook Award, and has been runner-up for the Pushcart and National Book Awards.
