This is Volume 5 of the Time-Life Library of Art, a biography of Michelangelo, a history of his time, and a review of his accomplishsments in painting, sculpture, and architecture. The text describes the political, social, economic, and religious conditions of his time and portrays the influential figures on his society and his life. These persons are made more real by the inclusion of their portraits and busts. Likewise, the book discusses artists who influenced Michelangelo and/or competed with him and includes many of their works. Photos of many of Michelangelo's paintings, sketches, journal entries, sculptures, and designs are inlcuded and discussed in detail. A lengthy section is devoted to the Sistine Chapel, including a fold-out panel of the long ceiling. The appendix includes a timeline of 15th and 16th century painters.
