An English translation of the Bible, in two volumes, was published in the city of London, ia the year 1766, which was the work of Anthony Purver, at that time a schoolmaster in Andover, England. He was born about the year 1702, in some part of Great Britain, but precisely where, I have been unable to learn. His parents were very poor, and when quite young he was apprenticed to a shoemaker. Notwithstanding the fact that his advantages for reading and study were exceedingly limited, he became, by dint of close application, with scarce any assistance, familiarly conversant with the Latin, Hebrew, and Greek languages ; and attained to some considerable proficiency in various other branches. By his own means, chiefly, he fitted himself for the office of teacher, which he filled to great acceptance. His death took place in 1777. Purver was a Quaker. His translation of the Bible was purchased of him, in manuscript, for one thousand pounds, by Dr. Fothergill, also amember of the Society of Friends, who published it at his own risk. ROGER SHERMAN.
