This book was enjoyable, but kind of felt empty towards the end. The characters that had been pretty well developed early suddenly made odd choices right near the end - and then the book was done. And the fiery sparks that flew between the main characters for most of the book suddenly vanished and everything got mushy. Now, I enjoy mushy, but it felt weird in this case. Still a good read, and I may read others by this author if I run across them, but I won't seek them out.

A good book by a great author.
The book begins somewhat similar to The Falcon and the Flower (Young girl spiritually led in the faith of Old and protected by Grandmother only to be forced to marry or handfast in this case some Knight). The book develops the characters only partially to me. The Heroine is scared of the Hero for all of 2.5 seconds and then she is miraculously in love with him. The Hero just kind of dawdles around. Secondary characters steal the show, ie. The Bruce and Jory. Then the end comes way out of left field. The story still seems in progress and it ends. There are several loose ends that I would have loved to see finished, even in a 2 or 3 page epilogue if it must.
Overall, it's a good read and a pretty fast one for me. Definitely wouldn't rate it as one of Henley's best, but I wasn't so disappointed I didn't enjoy reading it.

Scottish romance set in the Highlands during the time of Robert the Bruce. Typical plot line with handfasted marriage, jealous ex-mistress and impending war all threatening to separate two lovers.

Great scottish romance. Main character was very sexy!

The story is leans more heavily towards history than romance so it wasn't what I was used to. I can tell she wasn't a bad writer but just not my thing. The ending was kind of abrupt and just there. Plus the secondary story of Bruce and Jory was very heartbreaking. For some reason, it made me really hate Bruce and I felt really bad for Elizabeth.
I think a lot of people would like this book but not if you are into lighthearted romance.

FANTASTIC book! Do you love Scotland's history, wrapped up in a love story? YOu must read this book!
I love this author, she never disappoints me. This is another great book. Read it in 2 days, couldn't wait to see what would happen to the characters. Alot of Historical fact is thru out the book, it helped to carry the story along with the romance.

This book was SO good! I love when historical novels give you a little history lesson with it's romance. I love how we fall in love with the hero along side of the heroine...it makes the read much more intimate. I certainly wish I could find myself a Highlander to handfast with so we could fall in love...Ahhhh

This was a good story

a year and a day was a good book. the beginning of the book was a little slow but after that it was good.

Really hated this book. It should come with a big warning: there is an extremely unhappy, unsatisfying ending to a romantic subplot.
Not your typical romance book, and I really liked it.
This book is different in that the "heroine" isn't rich. She's the daughter of the castle "steward" or manager. The new "owner" sees her as "fertile" and could possibly provide him with an heir!!
He offers her a handfast marriage (the year & a day) and will marry her if she gets pregnant in the year.
Good Read & a different take on a medieval romance.

in the beginning the guy sees the girl as nothing but a brood mare, he really wants a kid. they have lots of trouble including a mistress who wants him back and a whole bloody war in which he thinks her brothers are traitors.
"handsome & widowed, he feared only love...."
"beautiful & headstrong, she feared only him.."

A very good Highlander read.
Virginia Henley is a gifted writer. I love Medieval stories, and going so far back in time. The men are powerful and love their woman. I have read all of her books and was never disappointed. I would highly recommend every one.
