After I read the description of this novel, I decided to give it a chance. I finally got to it and was initially disappointed.

The plot seemed simplistic and the characters cliched. But, for whatever reason, I decided to continue reading it.

It wasn't until I finished that I realized why I enjoyed it so much. As a teenager, and into my early twenties, I read almost everything Edgar Rice Burroughs had written. I still have most of those books and I'm picking up a few I missed.

"Young Mrs Cavendish and the Kaiser's Men" is a bit more sophisticated than most of Burroughs work, but not by much. Which is probably why I enjoyed it so much, so much so I just requested two more of K.K. Beck's books to see if they are similar.

While the plot outlines on Fantastic Fiction don't leave me to think so, I hope I am mistaken.

"Young Mrs Cavendish" ends with several characters indicating there might be sequels, but after almost 30 years it doesn't appear so. Still, Ms. Beck is still with us and we can only hope. Perhaps, her protagonist in a sequel would be a grown-up George fighting Nazi spies.
