Luckily I wasn't living in New Orleans when Katrina came through. I just went down to help friends clean up afterward.
Pete Rose tells it like it was. Ugly, smelly, and heartbreaking---but New Orleans has a heart that won't die! Read this book if you want to know what Hurricane Katina really did to the city and the people; and what happened afterward...

1001 More Humorous Illustrations for Public Speaking : Fresh, Timely, and Compelling Illustrations for Preachers, Teachers, and Speakers
Review Date: 8/29/2011

The back cover has blurbs and recommendations from various speakers and ministers and editors. They describe the collection very positively and give some sincere praise.
But I originally came across a copy of this book in a waiting room and annoyed the other 'waiters' by cracking up and roaring with laughter repeatedly. That's my own recommendation.

The cover pretty much says it all---quips & quotes for writers and speakers. Anyone who does any public speaking can make good use of this hefty tome. And---unless you're talking to yourself!---any speaking you do is going to be in public, isn't it?
The book is divided alphabetically into handy topic sections such as Ability, Accidents, Accomplishments, Baby Sitters, Capital Punishment, Economists, Envy, Facts, Gambling, etc. down to Work, Yawns, Youth and Zeal.

Some samples include:
Dough is the wrong term for money. Dough sticks to your hands!
The man who thinks he knows it all has merely stopped thinking.
Germs attack the weakest part of the body, which is the reason for head colds.
Table manners must have been invented by people who were never hungry.
A politician is a fellow who's got what it takes to take what you've got.
If the world laughs at you, laugh right back--it's as funny as you are.

Good continuation of an excellent series. A small town has mysteriously vanished from contemporary America, and landed in the middle of Europe's 30 Years War. Not to mention landed right in the middle of the argument between the Holy Inquisition and the accused heretic Galileo.

Delightful quick read! Give this one as a gift to your best girlfriend (or enlighten a spouse or boyfriend!)

From back of book jacket-
What do only women understand?
* The itsy-bitsy quarter inch of extra flesh that turns a snug pair of pants into a too-tight pair of pants.
* Why Girls' Night Out is not on the list of optionals.
* That we're rarely paid what we're worth. There probably isn't enough money in the Department of the Treasury to cover that tab.
* Why an occasional compliment about your brains would be appreciated, interspersed with all those remarks about your body.
* Why you prefer to leave the house during football games, wall demolition, and software installation.
* That your handbag is your portable intensive-care unit.

Well written, has similarities to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

From back cover: Born into generations of prosperity, the four royal children of the Akaran dynasty know little of the world outside their opulent island paradise. But when an assassin strikes at the heart of their power, their lives are changed forever.
Forced to flee to distand corners and separated against their will, the children must navigate a web of hidden allegiances, ancient magic, foreign invaders, and illicit trade that will challenge their very notion of who they are. As they come to understand their true purpose in life, the fate of the world rests in their hands.

This is an oddly good story. Yeah, it's about magic and sorcery and magicians and stuff like that--but it's also about trying to get a job, dealing with an unreasonable boss, trying to get along with some nasty co-workers, and just bringing home a paycheck. Mills has a winner here!

From back cover: Gerald Dunwoody is a wizard. Just not a particularly good one. He's blown up a factory, lost his job, and there's a chance that he's not really a Third Grade wizard after all. So it's off to New Ottosland to be the new Court Wizard for King Lional. It's a shame that King Lional isn't the vain, self-centered young man he appeared to be. With a Princess in danger, a talking bird who can't stay out of trouble, and a kingdom to save, Gerald soon suspects that he might be out of his depth. And if he can't keep this job, how will he ever become the wizard he was destined to be?
THE ACCIDENTAL SORCERER is the first novel in the Rogue Agent trilogy, from one of fantasy's newest stars.

A fast-moving military/intelligence thriller with a more-than-capable hero. Think Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt. And he has a Russian counterpart with a taste for some personal and vicious revenge.

From back cover: U.S. military intelligence analyst Bill Lane is on the trail of a Romeo-class Russian sub. The sub was supposed to be harmlessly scuttled at a submarine graveyard, and the mastermind behind its theft, an ex-KGB agent named Valeri Yernin, was supposed to be dead. But Bill Lane will have to prepare himself for one more surprise when he finally tracks down his target--because his opponent will be devastatingly ready for him

McCaffrey does it again. A good light read. Acorna, the Unicorn Girl is no longer alone in the world; she has family! But of course not all is sweetness and light.

From back cover: Filled with adventure and wonder, Acorna's People continues the enthralling saga of Acorna, the beautiful, brave, and kindhearted creature known as the Unicorn Girl. -- "Welcome Home, Linyaari Child!" -- With the help of her "uncles" and the thousands of humans who love and admire her, Acorna has found her true people, the peaceful, telepathic Linyaari. But Acorna still has much to do before she can enjoy her new home. The legendary resting place of the lost Linyaari ancestors has yet to be found. And with the help of a rogue spacetrader and his feline sidekick, Acorna must strive to right an unspeakable wrong and defeat an enemy even crueler than the Khleevi. Along the way, she will at last uncover the Universe's most carefully guarded secret -- the true nature of the ancient link between the Linyaari and the space-faring humans she has also come to think of as her "people."

Another chapter in Acorna, the Unicorn Girl's story.
It's imaginative in its outline and the story is well told, but I was a little depressed or discouraged at the evil of people in the world-- not that I disagreed, I just wish that weren't so true-to-life.

From back cover: Aari has returned! Now he and his lifemate, the brave and beautiful Acorna, can finish rebuilding their once-decimated homeworld. Yet Aari's travels through time have left him oddly changed, and he barely remembers Acorna or their love. And as Aari's actions turn more sinister, Acorna must shift her attention to stopping the destruction of innocents by a vicious criminal. It is precisely the sort of weakness and confusion the dreaded Khleevi have been hoping for, as the brutal insectile oppressors set in motion their final invasion and the total destruction of the Linyaari and the conquest of their world. Though Acorna's heart is wounded, her courage and determination must remain strong in this dark time -- for only then will she be able to rescue the Aari she knows and adores, and halt the bloodthirsty alien menace for good and for all.

Review Date: 7/9/2009

I can't describe the book better than the blurb on the back, except to say that the writer makes you feel that you are very nearly personally with him on that drifting wreck of a raft. The broiling sun is roasting you and the Atlantic waves crashing and tumbling over you, over and over---over and over---over and over . . .

From back cover: On the night of January 29, 1982, Steven Callahan set sail in his small sloop from the Canary Islands bound for the Caribbean. Thus began one of the most astounding voyages of the century and one of the great sea adventures of all time.

Six days out the sloop sank, and Callahan found himself adrift in the Atlantic in a five-and-a-half-foot inflatable raft, with only three pounds of food and eight pints of water. Here is the riveting first-hand account of the only man in history to have survived more than a month alone at sea in an inflatable raft.

Racked by hunger, buffeted by storms, and broiled by the tropical sun, Callahan drifted for seventy-six days over eighteen hundred miles of ocean. He fought off sharks with a makeshift spear and watched nine ships pass by without turning back . . . he distilled water by the spoonful with a primitive still, and wasted to just over a hundred pounds, living on a sparse diet of raw fish.

Here is a story of anguish and horror, of undying he5roism and hope . . . the story of a man who peered into the darkest regions of nature and of his own soul--and survived to tell the harrowing tale.

A predictable genre romance, but still a light-hearted romp that's a fun read for a rainy afternoon.

From back cover: Fact: In the late 1800s, a spinster schoolteacher spent a summer in the Washington mountains searching for gold. Legend: Emelina Fleetwood found the gold -- and used it to buy five pairs of gemstone earrings, each in the shape of her favorite flowers. Before she died, she buried the treasure, then drew a map of the spot. Legacy: Well, one part of the legend is true. A crudely drawn map has been handed down to each generation of Fleetwood women. And if that's true, surely the rest of the legend must be. At least that's what Sarah Fleetwood believes -- and she's the current owner of the map. Gideon Trace, the treasure hunter she's hired to help her, isn't so sure. But Sarah is convinced he's some kind of hero, and if that's enough to keep her close to him, Gideon's more than willing to share the adventure.

An interesting new take on the paranormal, set on the planet Harmony.

From back cover: Life is tough enough these days for Lydia Smith, licensed Para-archeologist. Seriously stressed-out from a nasty incident in an alien tomb, she is obliged to wrok part-time in Shrimpton's House of Ancient Horrors, a very low budget museum. She has a plan to get her career back on track, but it isn't going well. Stuff keeps happening.
Take the dead body that she discovered in one of the sarcophagus exhibits. Who needed that? Finding out that her new client, Emmett London, is one of the most dangerous men in the city isn't helping matters either. And that's just today's list of setbacks. Here in the shadows of the Dead City of Old Cadence, things don't really heat up until AFTER DARK.

Another tale set on Castle's planet, Harmony, where dust bunnies aren't dangerous unless you see their teeth---but by then it's too late!

From back cover: Life is complicated for Lydia Smith. She's working at that tacky, third-rate museum, Shrimpton's House of Ancient Horrors, trying to salvage her career in para-archeology--and dating the most dangerous man in town. Just when she thinks she might be getting things under control, she stumbles over a dead body and discovers that her lover has a secret past that could get him killed. Just to top it off, there's trouble brewing underground in the eerie, glowing green passageways of the Dead City.
Of course, all of these problems pale in comparison to the most pressing issue: Lydia has been invited to the Restoration Ball, and she hasn't got a thing to wear . . .

-----A good continuation of THERE WILL BE DRAGONS and THE EMERALD SEA, military/fantasy fiction in a post-disaster future Earth---by the author of A HYMN BEFOR BATTLE, GUST FRONT, and (with David Weber) the Prince Roger series including MARCH UPCOUNTRY, MARCH TO THE SEA, and MARCH TO THE STARS----
The world had been a paradise until the Fall, when the holders of the control codes for the world-spanning program called 'Mother' fell out in civil war. The United Free States felt well-defended behind its screen of elite naval Dragon carriers that held sway in the Atlantis Ocean. But when New Destiny proved to have dragon carriers of its own (and more of them) the linch-pin of the UFS defense went out the window.
Edmond Talbot had never really studied naval warfare, but what he didn't know about war in general hadn't been written. So when he took over the navy, at its moment of utter defeat, New Destiny's problems were just beginning.

A romance/thriller. I didn't read the others, so I don't know how good they are, but this one had some pretty far-fetched plot elements. Sexy, but not always extremely logical.

From back cover:
They were known as the 'no-account Raines boys' but they've grown into successful, honorable men and everything they have, they've fought for tooth and nail. Now each of the three brothers has one last obstacle to overcome to claim what's eluding them: love.

Secrets don't stay buried long in cattle country. Sarah Allen, the beautiful girl who humiliated Jackson Raines in high school is back in town. Not so long ago, she couldn't wait to leave Wind Canyon, Wyoming, in her dust. But, recently widowed, she has nowhere else to go and finds herself on Jackson's ranch. And despite everything, Jackson's finding himself reluctant to get rid of her.
Sarah brings her own kind of trouble, and he can't resist trouble. Enemies of her dead husband show up making threats, thinking she has something they're owed. They're not taking no for an answer, but what they will take is the one thing she has left -- her daughter. Jackson's the only one who might be able to save little Holly and bring her home.
