I love this series by Lori G. Armstrong. "Shallow Grave" is the third of four (so far) books featuring Julie Collins, a PI in "Bear Butte County", South Dakota, which is somewhere in the Rapid City/Sturgis area. Julie Collins is a hard drinking and hard smoking woman with sharp wit and a (mostly) bad attitude. She is in a tenuous relationship with the leader of a biker gang though her partner may or may not be in love with her as well. There are a couple of mysteries in this book that parallel and merge and keep you guessing until the end. Julie Collins is Stephanie Plumb on jet fuel. In South Dakota. Good stuff!
