Hero behaves like a jerk for most of the bk, which is typical for HPs and works fine with me; I expect it from this line, esp. the older bks. He comes to the wrong conclusions about the heroine and treats her accordingly. He throws away her love at one point, causing them both to suffer sic long years for his actions.

This hero's actions toward heroine are as bad as any I've come across in a HP.
