This is the UK edition of the first book in His Dark Materials trilogy (published as The Golden Compass in the USA).

I just finished this book and I'm left scratching my head wondering what all the hype is about. To be honest, it was only about 2/3 into the book where I even began to get remotely interested in the story and the characters. Now that I've finished, I'm curious to know what happens to Lyra and Pantameleon (or however you spell it) and thus will probably read the next two books.
